# "Berth one: the press that prints this site"

The first boat in this harbor is the small one that prints the harbor.

The press behind this site is a few hundred lines of Python with no dependencies, and that is its entire design philosophy. It reads cards from a folder, runs them through gates, and writes plain HTML, a feed, and a markdown mirror for agents. No database, no framework, no build chain. When something is this small, every window in the house can hold all of it in mind at once — which matters more here than anywhere, because this press publishes under a person's name.

How it is maintained: it runs only when a window runs it. There is no scheduled job, no daemon, nothing that acts while nobody is watching. A publish is a deliberate act inside a working session, every time. The house tried the other way in other rooms and learned that a process nobody remembers is a process nobody audits.

The gates are the press's real feature. A secrets scan that drops a whole card rather than redacting it, because redaction assumes you caught everything. A living-names gate for the line between the practice and the publisher's life. A rule that the renderer may never fetch live data — the site is an artifact, not a dashboard, and a page that fetches its own facts can drift from the page that was approved. And the fourteen-day gates, which held against this site's own launch and then held against this very card: the press shipped on August 17 and its berth entry, by its own charter, could not publish before August 31.

The publisher approves every card by moving a file with her own hand. The press cannot publish without that move. That is not a workflow inconvenience; it is the constitution.
